5 signs your phone battery is failing (and when to replace it)
Phone batteries wear out — it's normal. Most start to struggle after about 2–3 years or 500+ charge cycles. Here's how to tell yours is on the way out, and when a battery replacement is the smart move.
1. It dies way before bedtime
The clearest sign: a phone that used to last all day now needs a top-up by lunch. As a battery ages it holds less charge, so your screen-on time drops noticeably.
2. It shuts down unexpectedly
If your phone powers off at 20%, 30% or even 40% — especially in the cold — the battery can no longer deliver steady voltage. That sudden death is a tell-tale sign of a worn cell.
3. Charging is slow, or it won't hold charge
A tired battery can charge slowly, stall at a percentage, or drop fast right after you unplug. (If it won't charge at all, it might be the charging port rather than the battery — we can tell you which.)
4. It runs hot or feels swollen
Getting warm during normal use, or a screen/back that's starting to lift, can mean a swelling battery. Stop using a swollen phone and bring it in — it's a safety issue.
5. Battery health is low
On iPhone, check Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Below about 80% maximum capacity, Apple itself flags that the battery is degraded. Many Android phones show similar info in Settings or a diagnostics app.
When is a replacement worth it?
If your phone is otherwise working well and you plan to keep it another year or more, a fresh battery is one of the cheapest ways to make it feel new again — far cheaper than a new phone. Battery replacement at Five Star Repairs starts from $59 and is usually done same-day.
